August 13
Thursday
morning: stormy
afternoon: cloudy

Last night I was awoken to strange noises of rain and rattling shutters. I fell back asleep eventually. When I woke up the next morning Kochan was already awake and teasing me. Then the maid told me about the terrible storm last night. I remembered the noises that woke me up. Usually there are many people out on the street in the morning but this morning there was no one. Many trees in the neighborhood were knocked down. A persimmon tree fell down; a cedar tree fell down; and the important mum tree fell down too. The roof was damaged. After the rain stopped I went outside to look. On the other side of the street there was one man carrying an open umbrella but the wind was so strong his umbrella turned inside out and looked like a sake cup. I ducked inside the house to avoid the wind. Tsurusan said the storm will let up later that afternoon so I believed her. The rain did stop but it was still very windy. The wind was so strong it blew a steel bridge away. We couldn't go back to Kyoto today. We can't go back to Kyoto until the 16th (Teacher, please refer to the entry on the 16th for more details). I remember the 15th of August of last year. It was O Bon. in Kyoto so you could see the Daimonji in the east. To the west the image of a ship glowed . Last year at this time the neighborhood kids and I went to a field carrying lanterns to see the "Dai" on the mountain. I want to return to Kyoto very much. the end
